Regarding the time of the next problem's availability

Post by nickmcclendon »

It would be awesome if you guys could put up a clock to help with the next problem's availability. Just to have a
Problem 219 accessible on Sat 29 Nov 2008 at 5.00 am [GMT] (in 19 hours)
would be nice. I suppose I could write a program to do it, but I'm writing enough programs as it is...

The Problems page used to display the same information as the RSS feed but as the number of members increased I had to continue streamlining the scripts and, as you are aware, most pages are cached (Next update at...). To reduce the demands on the server even the new problem information was cached and as this was a static string it was not possible to provide dynamic feedback.

Anyway, since those troublesome days (from my perspective in keeping the website running smoothly with ever increasing traffic) we have upgraded our hosting significantly. So I've modified the script to display the same information seen in the RSS feed. The data for new problems is still cached, but it is reading a timestamp which is then converted into the human friendly format. I don't envisage the calculations causing too much stress for the server, but we'll see how it goes.
