Paper/Pencil Problems
Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
Problem 145 (View Problem), I think it's easier on paper than programming.

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
How about adding Problem 241 (View Problem) to the list.
When you assume something, you risk being wrong half the time.

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
Legendre made a table of the first million prime numbers on his own, and that led him to the conjecture that is now known as the prime number theorem. We are just lazy...

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
Problem 38 (View Problem) Don't know how I missed gamma's P/P solution, and yet it's the first post.
Problem 100 (View Problem) Had done it before I learnt how to solve pell's equation by hand.
Problem 147 (View Problem) Props to Eigenray & ke9tv
Problem 148 (View Problem)
edit: I'm level 4 now! Woot woot

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
Problem 009 (View Problem) is easy too.
It's 2 equations with 3 unknowns.
I used excel to iterate through some numbers, but it's easily doable without a computer.

Problem 162 (View Problem) Treating the summation most people used as geometric series, solution can be found with just MS Calculator!
Problem 4 (View Problem) Just saw Begoner's solution on the first page.

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
I did Problem 301 (View Problem) with pencil/paper
Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
Problem 45 (View Problem) and I'm very proud.
I can find the next one too.
I can find the next one too.

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
If you're going to count 139 and 138 (although I personally would not have the patience to do them without a computer myself
), the solutions to 321,140 and 137 are pretty similar.

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
138 & 139 simplify to pell's equation which can be solved on paper. Your examples give pell-like equations but not doable without a computer as far as I can tell.

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
Perhaps I'm saying too much, I don't know. But they can all be solved with xxx can they not?

Yes, you are.idantlol wrote:Perhaps I'm saying too much, I don't know. But they can all be solved with ...... can they not?
Solutions to the problems are not to be discussed in this forum.
Can the spoilers in the previous posts be removed, or do I have to do it?

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
Added. Sadly, I didn't get to read your suggestion. Would it be ok if you posted it on the Problem 321 (View Problem)? It's the only unarchived thread for those three.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Paper/Pencil Problems
That's how I solved the problem too. But to find "it", I had to use bruteforce like most did on the forum. Can you do find it with just paper/pencil?
