Problem 109
Hi, I don't understand the final question of the Problem 109 about darts:
"How many distinct ways can a player checkout with a score less than 100?"
What does it means with "less than 100"?
Do I have to sum the distinct ways to checkout with a score of N where 2 <= N <= 100?
Or just calculate the distinct ways to checkout with a score of 100?

That is exactly what you are asked to do, with the exception that N < 100.Do I have to sum the distinct ways to checkout with a score of N where 2 <= N <= 100?
checkout with a score less than 100?

Hi everybody,
I wonder if there is (or not) currently a matter with problem 109 : I found easily the fact that there are 42336 distinct ways of checking out in total, as announced in the text... However, when I added a simple filter to my algorithm to find the number of distinct ways to checkout with a score less than 100, my answer was refused... Is this a bug, or am I wrong somewhere ?

I have a question. With a score of 3 you can checkout with S1 D1, with a score of 2 you can checkout with just D1, is it considered different ?

It probably doesn't pertain to this problem, but what happens if a player's last dart lands on a double and reduces their score to 1? Is that a win, but not a checkout?

No, the problem specifies that you need to end on 0 with a double to win; ending on 1 or lower without a double is considered bust.

1. The total is not equal to zero or
2. The last dart was not a double?

If you reduce to 0, the last dart MUST be a double for the sequence to count. That "last" dart can be the 1st, 2nd or 3rd one. For example, with a score of 50, you win if you throw a bullseye with your first dart. You don't have to throw the other two darts.

Need a confirmation of my understanding
is D1 0 D3 same as D1 D3
My understanding is that because of the combination of the below two rules, the above is true:
Single Dart throw: 21
Double Dart Throws: 62 x 21
Three Dart Throws: 62*61*0.5*21 + 21+20+16
If we consider the D1 0 D3 different from D1 D3, then I can account for the X 0 Y case and add 62 x 21 to make the total distinct ways to 42336 .

i need to know:
1. what do D1,D2,S1 etc mean
2. what are their scores, which ones even exist
3. i am supposed to calculate solutions for score < 100 but even 3x bullseye only gets you down to 151 points if you start at 301. huh?
4. "T20 T20 D25 (two treble 20s and double bull)." -> huh again. how does that lead to 301-170=131? 20+20+25=65, not 131
5. what is the meaning of the numbers around the circle

Double 1, Double 2, Single 1. T4 would be Treble 4.
Double 1 scores 2*1 = 2. Double 2 scores 2*2 = 4. Single 1 scores 1*1 = 1. Treble 4 would score 3*4 = 12. There are single, double, and treble versions of all of the numbers from 1 to 20, and also single and double versions of 25 (the bullseye).2. what are their scores, which ones even exist
The problem is imagining that you've already been playing for some time, and have already reached a score less than 100 (exactly how you reach this score doesn't matter, but you will have to consider all of the numbers less than 100 as starting points). It's asking how many ways you can reduce that to zero in a single round of up to three throws.3. i am supposed to calculate solutions for score < 100 but even 3x bullseye only gets you down to 151 points if you start at 301. huh?
T20 is treble 20, which scores 60. D25 is double bullseye, which scores 50. 60 + 60 + 50 is 170.4. "T20 T20 D25 (two treble 20s and double bull)." -> huh again. how does that lead to 301-170=131? 20+20+25=65, not 131
But the scores in darts go backwards. You start with 301 points, and subtract whatever numbers you hit. So if you start on 301 and hit T20 T20 D25, you're left with 301 - 170 = 131.
They're the base scores (before considering doubles and trebles) for each sector of the circle. For example, hitting the black areas above the 3 at the bottom of the board will score you 3 points. Hitting the red area directly next to the 3 will score 2*3 = 6. Hitting the red area between the two black area will score 3*3 = 9.5. what is the meaning of the numbers around the circle

2 and 3. I don't believe their scores are relevant. Assume they're low enough to win.
4. You're missing the point of "treble" and "double". 3x20+3x20+2x25=170
5. Those are the scores if the dart lands in that wedge. That score can be doubled or tripled if they land in the appropriate ring. If it lands in the middle ring of the topmost wedge, it scores 3x20, abbreviated T20 in this problem.
