Problem 203

Post by ThomasH »

Problem 203 to 207 was announced for Sat 06 Sep 2008 at 1.00 pm [GMT].
I logged in at 14:50 MESZ and was surprised: the problems were already accessible (and every problem was already solved). Is there a time problem (I thought, the difference GMT and MESZ is 2 hours)?

Yep, the server seems to keep Daylight Saving Time. So it actually launches at 12.00 GMT.
This has been the case from end of March, when DST started, but of course all of us forgot about that during the summer break.
As the emails and the announcement on the problems page and the RSS feed are automatically generated there is nothing that can be done against that.
Until end october I fear that this discrepancy will remain to start again next year end March.
Sorry for not making a note on that on the news page, I forgot about that too.

The best thing to do is perhaps:
Change the time settings in your profile to GMT. Then the PE pages in the upper right corner will display the time the server thinks it is.

I've solved all 5 new problems in about 50 minutes.

Out of interest, what happened to the regular shift of times for each new problem? This is the same as last week, which is in the middle of the night my time :(

Problem 201 and 202 were published in July on Saturday, 1300 GMT.
Regularly 203..207 would have been published on Friday 1300 GMT.
We decided not to shift there because, for the special occasion, we reckoned that Saturday would be a better day than Friday.
Also we reckoned that for the special occasion last week, publishing at 13.00 GMT would be best for most of the PE users covering from Asia to America. Unfortunately this leaves out "down under".
Now we start at Friday 13.00 GMT and the next weeks we will shift by the ordinary 4 hours forward again until we are back at Saturday 1300 GMT. After that we will shift back to Friday 1300 GMT.
