Clarification question:
Suppose that, in a particular race, each boat $B_j$ rows at a steady speed $v_j=−logX_j$ metres per second...
Is this log base 10 or base e?

You can take it to be base $e$ ... but actually it doesn't matter because a different base would just scale all speeds by the same constant without affecting the sequence of events.
